Julie Mathers

I was born in Sydney, Australia. I completed my undergraduate studies in Theatre at The University of New South Wales and studied Performance in New York City at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. I just completed a Masters Degree in Art at UNSW Art and Design ( COFA) in Photomedia.

My photographic practice is influenced by various photographic styles and eras.
My photography reflects the essence of a person or an object- the inner life, their presence and the turmoil or stillness of their existence in the world surrounding them.
My background is the theatre and film and my photos are reflective the light and drama of this medium.
My practice is to construct scenes of everyday life, in a book shop, sitting in a bar and so forth. I usually photograph the in- between moments of everyday life, individual aloneness, or contemplations. The photos give a sense of intrusion or an interloping of the subjects.
I also construct images of objects representing or symbolizing moments or events of life. Presenting the blur of social construction and the fragility of humanity.
